While my office dress code is not super conservative by any stretch of the imagination (actually, I don’t think there is a dress code), dressing for work when pregnant is still a challenge. I work in women’s magazines, so it’s all about fashion, which brings its own pressure. A lot of the women I work with managed to look ridiculously stylish the whole time they were pregnant, so it’s both inspired me and stressed me out.
But a lot of my friends work as lawyers or in finance or in other industries where the dress code is much more conservative and they’re always asking me for maternity style advice. So I thought I’d put together a post about dressing for the office when pregnant.
This dress isn’t actually a maternity dress, but I bought it a size up and it currently fits with some room. While it’s definitely going to get too snug in probably a month or two, I only went up one size because I plan on wearing this after the baby arrives too.
When dressing the bump for the office, opt for longer hemlines — at least knee length, so it won’t ride up when you sit or your bump gets bigger. Personally, I love shift dresses and sizing up rather than more traditional empire waist maternity dresses, which tend to make me feel large and extra pregnant because they emphasize the chest and belly.
Since I am always pregnant in summer it seems, I also love maxi dresses. They’re easy to dress it up and make more office-friendly with a blazer and heels. But they also work well with flat sandals on weekends or fun heels for a party.
Personally, I’m all about the kitten heel or wedge when pregs (which is why I’m living for these mules). I also live in black pants (The Row makes a great pair that work when you’re not pregs so you can justify the splurge and these ones are a great price point) paired with Hatch maternity blouses, which you can top with a blazer for a more conservative office to make a suit.
