I’m a huge fan of layering for a number of reasons. It’s practical — layering keeps you warm when just a coat won’t cut it or when you work in a crazy cold office or it’s that time of year when it’s cold in the morning, warm in the afternoon and cool again in the evening. Layering though is also a favorite fashion editor trick that helps you stretch your wardrobe, enabling you to wear warm weather staples and lightweight pieces into the fall and winter. Plus, it looks really cool and effortlessly genius when done correctly and can make basic pieces look fashion-forward and unique. Fashion editors and anyone who works in fashion (or has a stylist like most celebs) are pros at layering, but for the rest of us, it’s often awkward/uncomfortable/bulky and never looks quite right. Let’s face it figuring our how to layer is overwhelming and feels to daunting for many of us to try that hard at it.
But I assure you, the secrets for how to layer are easy for anyone to master. Trust me, it’s not that only certain people are born with the layering gene and the rest of us are just screwed. I definitely felt that way but have learned it’s less about your styling skills or ingenuity and more about having the right layering pieces and knowing some key layering formulas. And frankly, it’s worth learning because it will reinvigorate your wardrobe and help you get through fluctuating temps and cold winters. To help you learn how to layer, I put together a bunch of easy layered outfit formulas that will get you through the winter. No matter your style or wardrobe, follow this simple guide for how to layer.
