If you’re embracing fall’s boho vibe, skip the jacket and make a poncho your go-to layering piece for beating the seasonal chill. With jeans and a tee or turtleneck, it’s cozy but has a slightly less expected look than a sweater for weekend brunching and erranding. But I love how even in a chunky knit, it can look incredibly chic in that sophisticated wish-I-was-that-kind-of-working-woman way with a pencil skirt or tailored sheath and heels. The best part is, unlike a jacket that can feel confining with too many layers stuffed under or inadequate (or just basic) without, it’s room leaving you completely unencumbered and yet it’s genius at disguising whatever’s underneath — a ratty tee worn sans bra on a coffee run, a bump you’d like to keep away from prying eyes, or a bulge you’d rather not see. Since I’m such a fan, I thought I’d put together poncho outfit ideas.
The best fall outfits are the ones that make you feel like you’re cozying up in the coziest blanket, and in cashmere, or soft knit, the poncho, my friends, can be just that. Even if you go for a more structured wool or blend, you still feel like you’re wearing a blanket, and yet look as polished and elegant as any Park Avenue born-and-bread. I truly hit the jackpot when I discovered my ridiculously warm, soft, and I gotta use it again, cozy poncho/button-front cape at a Roberta Freymann sample sale years ago for, I kid you knot, $30. Yep, you hate me and you should. The $700-on-sale-for-$30 (probably because it was mismarked #samplesaleproblems) cashmere yumminess is my favorite thing in the world come fall, and I really haven’t worn it enough, something I plan to rectify starting NOW. It’s like free therapy with all the life-affirming compliments and envious stares I get every time I wear it.
Here are my favorite poncho outfit ideas.
