A few years ago pleased skirts came back into style and since then, it feels like every blogger and street style star is wearing them. It’s one of the few trends that has longevity and has become, dare I say it, a closet staple. But with good reason. A pleated skirt is versatile and easy to wear a million different ways, but it also feels unique, if that makes sense.
A pleated skirt is one of my favorite pieces to wear to work (I’m eyeing this one for spring). I love how it gives a typical skirt some interest and shape and yet feels appropriate for running from a fashion show to a meeting to my son’s school play. Sometimes separates can seem like they’re more difficult to put together versus just throwing on a dress, but you can wear a pleated skirt with anything. I love to pair pleated skirts with everything, from tees and moto jackets to sweaters, button-ups, and even off the shoulder tops.
They’re also versatile enough to wear round. You can team a pleated skirt with boots and a sweater during the colder months, and in summer, I love the look with cute sandals and a short sleeve top. It’s also an easy piece to dress up or down. Wear a pleated skirt with a graphic tee and sneakers for a more casual vibe, or pair a pleated skirt with a button-up and pumps for a classic office look.
Here are my top tips for how to style a pleated skirt:
Choose the right length: You can go for mini, knee-length, ir midi pleated skirts, depending on the occasion and setting.
Consider the material: You want to choose a pleated skirt in a fabric that will match the occasion — chiffon will give your look an ethereal vibe, silk has a more elegant feel, leather can add chic edge, while knit will add a cozy vibe that’s perfect for winter. The material will influence the overall look, so choose one that matches the season and event.
Tuck in your top for a more polished look: Tucking in your top can help define your waist and create a polished look. You can choose from a blouse, sweater, tee, or tank top, depending on your style and the formality of the occasion.
Keep it casual with an oversized sweater: For a more laidback vibe, top it with an oversized sweater that either hits just past the hips or 3/4 of the way down.
Layer a jacket on top: Depending on the weather and the occasion, you can layer with a blazer, cardigan, denim jacket, or leather jacket. These layers can add depth and warmth to your outfit.
Choose the right shoes: Your choice of shoes will set the vibe for your overall look. Heels, ankle boots, and knee-high boots can elevate the outfit, while sneakers or flats can make it more casual.
Experiment with textures: Mixing different textures in your outfit can create visual interest. For example, pairing a pleated skirt with a fuzzy sweater or a denim jacket creates a chic contrast.
