One of my favorite fashion hacks when the weather gets cold is to wear an oversized sweater over a dress. Yep, stretch the life of basically any dress in your closet by layering a sweater on top. It’s such an easy trick but it’s not always obvious. I learned it during my magazine editor days and it’s why I never pack away all my summer dresses anymore. It’s also a great way to make a dressier dress or one with a cutout back or low neckline work for daytime. I will often wear a cocktail dress during the daytime by throwing a sweater over. The key is to pick the right dress and sweater. A sweatshirt and sneakers dresses down long dresses for daytime, while a luxe cashmere sweater covers up slip dresses for the office or casual cocktails. A big, chunky sweater takes summery dresses into colder weather, and cocktail dresses to the office.
The trick to wear a sweater over a dress is to pick a dress that isn’t too bulky on top and doesn’t have any attachments that will stick out of the sweater. It also works best with dresses that nip at the waist rather than shifts and loose maxis as they can completely loose shape with a sweater on top and look a bit more sloppy. With that said, some of the most stylish do it and make it look great. Belting the sweater over can help if you have a more billowy dress underneath. I love this also for when the weather starts out warm or cold and then changes midday as it often does in springtime and fall. Here are some ideas for how to wear a sweater over a dress.
