I admit it’s taken me awhile to come around to the idea of mules. They just felt like glorified clogs, and while I rocked my J.Crew clogs like the best of them back in the day, I feel like now I’m at the age where clogs = mom shoes, and I am not ready to be put in that category yet. My mom jeans are already pushing it. So when they first came back on the scenes, reinvented as “mules,” I ignored them, hoping they’d follow other half-assed comeback attempts like the fanny pack, which even Chanel couldn’t make cool again to the masses (though Carrie Bradshaw did make me think for a hot sec that I too might be able to bring back the dorky mom purse of the ’80s). But the sleeker, more modern design of the mule, and its various incarnations, from flat oxford styles to stacked heels and cool patterns, have made them a lasting trend and turned me into a convert. Not to mention the fact that you can just slip them right on — no buckles, ties, zippers to deal with. And if you’re worried about them slipping off, you can cheat with a pair of slingbacks. I just ordered a pair of these peep-toe Tibi mules on major sale, and thanks to the bevy of summer sales going on now, I had to hold myself back from also scooping up these geometric Tory Burch mules, these wedge Vince mules in nude and black, and these perfect summer mules from Chloe, to boot. It doesn’t hurt that they go with everything and offer a little more protection against overly AC’d offices.
