Holding On To Summer

by krismkoch

It always happens. The last week of summer is rainy and cool and ruins Labor Day plans, and everyone thinks fall is coming and then all the pools and beaches close, and bam, summer returns and it’s 90 degrees. After a chilly few days, summer has just returned here on the East Coast, and I for one, am not sad about it. I know everyone else is ready for sweater weather, but I am not ready for summer to be over. Usually I can’t wait for the next season, but this year, I am holding onto summer as long as I can. Maybe it’s because I had the best summer I can remember in a long time, but I welcomed the return of summer this past weekend, just in time for the official last day of summer. We took advantage of the warm weather on Sunday by heading to the beach for one last bbq. It was Charlotte’s first beach trip, and a great way for James to run around and play in the sand and to take advantage of an extra day in the sun. Spending time at the beach or pool are probably my favorite last days of summer activities. They’re what I miss the most when it’s cold and snowy and summer seems so far away.

end of summer

I always find it really hard when you get summer weather in fall. Partly because all you want to do is wear sweaters and drink warm coffee and pick apples. But also because summery clothes are usually lighter and super summery, so it feels weird to wear them at the end of September. That’s why I’m so glad I invested in this dress when I was pregnant with Charlotte (see how I styled it pregnant here). Not only does it work with and without a bump, but the darker floral print perfectly transitions into fall but the colors aren’t too fall-y that it feels weird to wear it in July. We’ve had a heat wave recently with summer temps in full force, so I’ver been wearing it with sandals, but I’m excited to style it with a sweater and boots when it does actually get colder.

I know everyone is excited for fall and ready for it to cool off, I’m excited to have a return to summer. Maybe because I’m on maternity leave so I can enjoy the warm temps, or maybe it’s because I had one of the best summers I can remember, but I’m just not ready to totally let go of summer and embrace the new season, which is funny because normally I’m ready for a new season before the current one ends. But until then, I’m going to be making the most of these warmer, summery days with some of my favorite last days of summer activities: bike rides, making s’mores by the fire pit, spending time at the beach and pool, playing tennis outside, bbqs, and outdoor picnic style dinners with friends at our club.
