I can’t believe that I will officially have a second grader this fall. Yes, James will be in second grade this year, and I am all up in my feels about it. Kindergarten still feels little, first grade still pretty small, but second grade really marks the start of his journey to boyhood. He calls me “bruh” sometimes and says “that’s sick” and wears sports shorts and goes shirtless while playing sports outside with his friends. He’s still so sweet and innocent in so many ways but he’s definitely growing into a big boy. I don’t know how time has flown by so fast and how much my little boy has grown. Soon he’ll be too big to pick up. Ok, I’m going to stop before I start sobbing. Time is truly a thief. But let’s focus on happier things — back to school shopping and specifically, boys back to school clothes. I’ve done a roundup of the cutest back to school clothes for toddler boys (which also works for baby boys), but I am starting a new post dedicated to boys back to school clothes, which is really directed at preschool and elementary school aged boys. James has outgrown the adorable overalls and bubbles of yesteryear and is now in a little boy dressing phase.
All the boys love the sports clothes — basketball shorts, Under Armour, Nike, etc. — and James looks up to the older kids and wants to dress like the fourth graders. But I’m trying to hold onto my right to dress him like a proper school boy for as long as I can. I will probably lose the battle after the first week, but I decided this year to buy him a mix of first week of school clothes that he can also put on for nicer occasions this fall and winter and the sporty everyday play clothes he loves. I don’t want him feeling like a dork whose mom dresses him at school and I want him to feel confident walking into school, but also please can I just dress him forever? I think that’s probably a fair compromise so I’ve included a mix of both, including the least offensive athletic wear I could find for boys, in my round up of boys back to school clothes.
