I know people have a lot/hate relationship with Costco. I had heard of this place where you can buy a million rolls of toilet paper at one time but had never stepped foot in this behemoth of a warehouse/store until I moved to Connecticut. Frankly, until then we had never had the space for more than 12 rolls of toilet paper and 6 rolls of paper towels at a time. I was also hugely distrustful of the whole operation. I like that on Amazon I can price compare and everything shows up at my door, and I had read that it’s not necessarily all a good deal. It’s just a way to buy in bulk. In some cases, you save a lot but it’s not always cheaper than what you’ll find on Amazon or Walmart. What I’m starting to realize is that buying in bulk can be helpful when you have a lot of people living in one house, and mouths to feed and butts to clean. As the kids get bigger and we get busier, we run out of things like toilet paper and pancake mix and ziplock bags at a faster rate than I can restock so it’s helpful to just buy a huge case that will last us months so I’m not constantly shopping and worrying about what’s running out. So in that way, Costco can be really helpful because you can buy a bunch in bulk at once and they deliver if, like me, you’re not a big fan of in person shopping. But what I didn’t realize about Costco is that they offer some good options for food as well. A friend recommended their steaks, they have some items in the frozen and fresh food departments that are helpful ingredients for meals or quick meals we can make, and they have lots that I can use for snacks for the kids of course. But as I said, not everything is a deal and you kind of have to experiment to figure out what’s good and what’s not, so I thought I’d share my Costco shopping list.
Let’s be serious, I also love to see what other people buy at the grocery store, and I want this blog to be full of all the things I wish others would share. I started it because I wanted to see what real people wore to actual things in their lives, not just highly stylized outfits people took for blog pics that wouldn’t work for work or everyday. And while I appreciate recipes, I don’t have time to do a ton of cooking and experimenting with different finds at the grocery store (I’m too busy online shopping for clothes and the the kids and house lol), so I like to see what other people find that they love to use for easy meals or kids’ snacks or to munch on etc. So if you like this, I’ll share more of my shopping lists from other stores, but to start, here’s my Costco shopping list.
Let me know what I’m missing out on and I’ll add more.
Keurig Coffee Pods: We have a Keurig and three people in our house who drink coffee (I’m including our nanny — I obviously don’t let our kids drink coffee sillies) so we go through these quick. I also have been drinking way too much coffee recently. I don’t know if buying in bulk like this saves tons, but I like that I can get a huge box that will last us about a month. There’s almost always one type of coffee on sale, so I usually go with that since I don’t really care what flavor or brand it is as long as it has caffeine but my husband has been favoring the Starbucks pods so we’ve been doing those lately.
Grilled Chicken Bites: I love these pre-cooked cut up chicken bites. I toss them on a plate, heat them up and throw them in a salad for a quick, easy lunch. They’re not cheap, but I need the convenience at this point in my life when I’m running between pick up and meetings and all the things.
Chicken Kabobs: I will serve these with rice and veggies for an easy weekday meal and my kids really like them. You can also peel them off the stick and throw them in a salad. I have been known to snack on them as well.
Sous Vide Sliced Steak: I’m not a big red meat eater, but I feel like I’ve been depriving my family of their red meet, so I love that this is really easy to cook up in a few minutes and you have an easy steak dinner, no grill involved. I’ll serve with quinoa and broccoli or asparagus or you could toss in a salad.
Organic Salad Mix: I make salad almost every day, so I love that I can buy a huge container of lettuce that will last almost the whole week.
Toilet Paper and Paper Towels: I don’t know if I save tons by buying them in bulk or at all, but it’s really helpful if you have the storage space to just buy in crazy bulk. It’ll last you for months and you don’t have to worry about the dread that ensues when you run out of TP or the inconvenience of running out of paper towels.
Yogurt Pouches and Cups: My kids love these yogurt cups and they make for an easy breakfast or lunch while offering protein. I like that this type is organic and has less sugar but still gives them the flavored yogurt that unfortunately they love.
Organic Greek Yogurt: I prefer plain yogurt and use this for Brooks or for when we do make your own parfaits for breakfast. I also use Greek yogurt to make my healthy muffins, so this is always on my Costco shopping list.
Seltzer: It’s embarrassing how much seltzer we drink in our house. It’s actually crazy, so I prefer to buy in bulk and it’s definitely cheaper here than anywhere else I’ve found.
Siete Tortillas: These are so good and we go through them a lot (corn quesadillas are a favorite in our house), so I like to order them in bulk. They’re also gluten free so fyi.
Organic Eggs: We go through a lot of eggs in our house too, so I will buy in bulk when available.
Organic Avocados: This is so random, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how good the organic avocados at Costco are and they tend to last all week. I feel like even Whole Foods can be a mixed bag with the avocados.
Organic Chocolate Chip Granola Bars: I get these for the kids for quick snacks to pack in lunches or car rides.
Organic Fruit and Vegetable Pouches: My kids love those pouches and these offer up some fruit and veggies, so in terms of snack options, it’s not bad.
Bear Fruit Rolls: These are organic so they’re healthy, right?
Simple Mills Almond Crackers: We love these in our house. Charlotte has been loving eating then with mashed avocado recently. Like a healthier version of guac and chips.
Kodiak Cakes Pancake Mix: This is what we use most of the time to make pancakes and waffles. They’re tasty and packed with protein.
Organic Animal Crackers: Everyone in our house loves these and it’s kind of amazing how fast we can go through a huge tub.
