One of the most common questions I get asked is what to wear to work when pregnant. I work in a creative environment so I have a bit more leeway, but I also run a magazine brand so I also need to look the part. After a lot experimenting and two summer pregnancies, I’ve nailed down a bit of a Summer Maternity Work Uniform that checks all the boxes.
The key? A few great dresses that fit really well. I invest in really good dresses that I can wear to the office but also dress up for an event or a wedding or cocktail party. When buying anything that’ll fit your bump, you really want to make sure it can do triple duty. This Ulla Johnson dress is technically not maternity but I sized up and it fits my current bump perfectly with room to spare. I love the structured silhouette and that the print isn’t too loud. But most of all, I am obsessed with the ruffled shoulders. I like to choose dresses that have a little something special to them because let’s face it, dresses are an investment. It’s truly become my Summer Maternity Work Uniform.
I recently wore this to a cocktail party but you can pair it with pumps for the office or even dress it down with flat sandals. This is probably one of my favorite silhouettes to wear to the office when pregnant, but I usually invest in several dresses in different dress styles to get me through the summer — some a bit longer and flowier for stickier days and a few more structured options like this one. The great thing about summer dresses is you can always toss a jacket on top to make them feel more polished for the office.
