I have been bringing you outfit ideas for quite some time, but some of my most popular other posts are about closet organization and cleaning out. It totally makes sense. An organized, well edited closet makes getting dressed much easier. So I’m going to be launching a clothes organizing and cleaning franchise or vertical if you will. Each week, I’ll be bringing you a new installment with ideas for helping you better edit and maintain your wardrobe. I have closet organizing tips as well as ideas for storing your shoes, purses and jewelry. But jeans really deserve their own posts because they’re such a staple for so many of us, and if you’re like me, your jean collection has grown quite large over the years. So I’m going to talk to you today about how to hang your jeans.
You can totally fold your jeans and many people store them that way. Depending on closet space and set up, folding your jeans may make the most sense. I’ve certainly done it that way, but I’m going to suggest hanging them if you can find the space. Hanging your jeans is the best way to see them and as I’ve said before and will say again, if you can’t see all your clothes, you won’t wear them and it’ll take you much longer to get dressed. Visibility is key, and it’s harder to see what you have and to reach for jeans when they’re stacked. If you try to grab one from the bottom, they all come tumbling down, and it’s hard to see which is which so you pull a bunch down and then have to refold. Hanging them allows you better visibility and makes it easier to keep them organized. To encourage you to do just that, I’m breaking down how to hang your jeans. I know it seems like an obvious answer, but actually, a lot of people ask that and I had some questions when I finally took my jeans out of their piles and put them on hangers. Plus, hanging them the right way makes it easier to see which kind of jeans they are and helps to keep them looking fresh and wrinkle free.
Here’s how to hang your jeans correctly so they maintain their shape and are easy to see.
What You’ll Need to Hang Your Jeans:
- Hangers: Invest in sturdy hangers that won’t stretch or damage your jeans or break under their weight. The best hangers for jeans are these velvet hangers, which will keep them in place and won’t take up too much space. I also like to keep my hangers uniform. It looks better and keeps them all at the same length.
- Closet Space: Ensure you have enough closet space to hang your jeans without cramming them together, which can cause wrinkles and creases and make it hard to see them, defeating the whole purpose. You want a long rack if you have a lot of jeans like me. If you have double racks, I usually put my jeans on the bottom. Ideally, you want to ensure there’s enough space between each pair of jeans to prevent wrinkles.
Two Methods for How to Hang Your Jeans Properly:
Method One:
This is the preferred method for how to hang your jeans that stylists like the best.
- Fasten the Button and Zipper: Secure the button and zip up your jeans. This helps them maintain their form and prevents any unnecessary stretching. It’ll also help them to fold better.
- Fold Your Jeans in Half: Lay your jeans flat on a clean, flat surface and fold them in half lengthwise. Make sure the front pockets align with the back pockets.
- Hang by the Belt Loop: Slide one of the belt loops over the hanger’s hook. This method helps distribute the weight evenly, preventing stretching along the waistband.
- Leave Space Between Jeans: Ensure there’s enough space between each pair of jeans to prevent wrinkles. Overcrowding your closet can lead to unwanted creases.

Method Two:
This is another method for how to hang your jeans that works equally well but may make it harder to see your denim and can take up more closet space.
- Loop the bottom of your jeans through the hanger: Adjust so the waistband meets the hem of the jeans.

Method Three;
- Fasten the Button and Zipper: Secure the button and zip up your jeans. This helps them maintain their form and prevents any unnecessary stretching. It’ll also help them to fold better.
- Take jeans by the middle belt loop and hang them on hooks along the rod.

How to Organize Your Jeans When Hanging Them:
- Sort by Style and Color: For easy access and a neat appearance, organize your jeans by style (skinny, bootcut, straight-leg) and color (dark wash, light wash, medium wash, black, grey, white, etc.) within each category. I like to sort by color and then by style within each color but if you get dressed by style, then you can organize by style and then sort each style category by color. This makes choosing an outfit easier.
And those are my tips for how to hang your jeans. Pretty simple, but I bet a lot of people didn’t know about the first method, which is the one preferred by most stylists. You learn something new every day, right? Don’t say I didn’t teach you anything.
