The warm-weather layering staple I, like many preppy school kids of the ’80s/’90s, was forced to wear under my uniform when it was freezing outside was deemed uncool and forced into hibernation for what seems like well over a decade. But now it’s reemerged and like many trends at the moment riding the 90s wave, the preppy basic has now become cool again. But how to wear a turtleneck without looking like your ’80s mom? Try fitted styles in thin tee materials or boxy mock neck styles, and avoid anything awkwardly in-between. Or go for a chunky knit turtleneck style or a thin cashmere option. Pair the turtleneck with sleek separates for a thoroughly modern look a la Kendall Jenner, layer it under winter dresses to winterize them, or tuck it into skirt or culottes for a slightly warmer and more put-together alternative to a tee.
So how to wear a turtleneck right now? Tuck one into a full midi skirt or an A-line mini skirt depending on the vibe you want. Wear a turtleneck with jeans. I love a thin turtleneck tucked into flare jeans or cords. Or with boyfriend jeans. I love a chunky knit turtleneck with straight leg or boyfriend jeans and flats for the weekend or a casual wfh look. I also love a turtleneck used as a key layering piece. You can wear it under jackets — love it with an oversized plaid or menswear-inspired blazer. I also love it under dresses or even button-up shirts (buttoned-up almost all the way). When it’s really cold, I’ll wear turtlenecks under sweaters, paired with trousers, culottes or jeans. There’s truly nothing more chic than a cashmere turtleneck with jeans and chic flats or even heels. It’s so simple and chic in that quiet luxury way.
