Scarves are the accessory of the moment. In fun colors and prints, a scarf has always been a stylish girl’s secret weapon. They can be knotted, wrapped, draped, or, if you really want instant street style cred these days, belted. The latest scarf styling innovation has become an Insta mainstay ever since Olivia Palermo adopted Burberry’s genius styling trick. Whether long silk scarf or cozy cashmere wrap, who would’ve thought that combining two staples you likely already have in your arsenal — a belt and a scarf — could extend your wardrobe in infinite ways, adding ~style~ to low-key basics, bringing a much needed dose of freshness to an all-black look, and making a dress or top you’ve worn a million times look totally fresh, And yet now that it’s been spotted on every fashion blogger, editor, and muse, it seems so obvious. How were we not belting our scarves all this time?
The trick for how to belt your scarf is to choose a thinner belt. You want something simple that won’t compete with your scarf too. And you need a more oversized scarf. Anything too small won’t work. The idea is to basically turn it into a vest/shawl but in a cool way. I love this hack because it holds the scarf in place, making it a great outerwear option when it’s still not quite coat season and maybe not quite cold enough for a heavy sweater but you still want an extra layer. It’s a chic alternative to wrapping a scarf around your neck, and essentially turns your scarves into vests, helping to grow your wardrobe without spending a cent. And those, of course, are my favorite style hacks — I love to figure out ways to stretch my wardrobe and pieces in my closet I already own and when you belt your scarf you do just that.
