As someone who has to get dressed every day for work, I’m all about repurposing items in my closet in new ways. Contrary to popular belief, editors aren’t just gifted endless designer clothes, so it’s necessary to be strategic about what I buy. And just like many other working moms, my work clothes tend to be dry clean-only items that I’d rather not get toddler and puppy paws on so I essentially need two wardrobes — work and weekend. To stretch my closet as far as possible though I try to get creative with everything I own, repurposing items in different ways to create new looks from the pieces I already own. Case in point: this one-shoulder beach coverup/dress that I wore as a shirt recently. I just paired it with an old Zara midi skirt and it looked like a brand new outfit. Yep, today, I’m talking about how to wear a dress as a top.
I know this feels like one of those tips that fashion editors and influencers and stylists do but that doesn’t actually work in real life. The bulk and tucking seems next level and a lot to fuss over, but it’s actually easier than you think. The trick is to choose a dress with a thinner fabric that’s either mini or knee length, so you’re not trying to tuck in too much fabric. Then you want something wider on bottom line a full midi skirt, as seen here. Or, you can go with a shorter dress worn over skinny jeans or pants. I loved doing this styling trick when I was pregnant but it works really well when you’re not. It’s chic and unexpected and practical (pants are much warmer than tights, ya know?). Here is an example of how to wear a dress as a top that was really easy to pull off.
