What to Wear to Parent-Teacher Conferences

Confession: At our first ever parent-teacher conference when James was three years old, I cried. Not like a couple tears, I sobbed. Full on sobbed. Now, in fairness, I had just had a baby, and I was feeling very emotional and James is our first and I didn’t know what to expect. It wasn’t even that the teacher delivered bad news, but I guess I thought she was just going to tell us what they did all day and what he played with and not areas where he was learning and growing. Like I said, I had just had a baby and I was emotional. In retrospect, it was a perfectly good review and he’s doing just fine now. But ever since, conferences make me nervous. I know it’s not the case, but I always feel a little like I’m being judged, or really, my parenting is being judged. Like I should already know these issues and be working on them, or I should be doing flash cards or reading to the kids more or instilling better manners and discipline. I know it’s not about me and I need to remove myself from the equation, but I think it’s also because I still can’t believe I’m old enough to have kids in school getting reports. I feel like a child or phony half the time, so deciding what to wear to parent-teacher conferences takes on some added stress. I feel like I need to look my most responsible and capable, which is completely ridiculous, but I do believe clothes are armor to help give us confidence and tackle what we have on our plates, so I’m sharing ideas for what to wear to parent-teacher conferences.

Now the reality is you can absolutely wear leggings or jeans and a t-shirt or a nice dress or suit, or whatever you have on for the day. Fitting in conferences between meetings or kids activities or whatever else you have going on that day is always a juggle, so I don’t want to add any additional stress by making you think you need to focus on what you’re wearing.
