I’ve been trying to get outside to run or walk a few days a week as part of my workout routine. Even when it’s cold, I much prefer to exercise outside and get the fresh air. It’s not just a Covid thing — I was an outdoor runner in college (when it didn’t snow so much it was impossible) and I just find it really elevates my mood. For a long time, I was all about a good playlist to get me through my run or power walk. But these days, I’m really leaning into podcasts. I switched to podcasts when Dr. Becky, who I had been following religiously on Instagram, announced the launch of her podcast. I felt like listening to a podcast with parenting advice while working out was a great way to kill two birds with one stone, make my workout go faster, and hopefully, turn me into a better parent in the process. While I was waiting for new episodes, I started to discover a bunch of other podcasts for moms that I really enjoy and I thought I’d share.
Now, I just want to preface this by saying that these aren’t all parenting podcasts. I’d like to think that us moms are interested in more than just parenting advice or listening to shared motherhood experiences, although I included my favorite podcasts that do just that here. These are really my favorite podcasts to listen to on my workouts and when I return to work, will probably be for my commute as well. I know there is so much out there, so I find it helpful to have a source that narrows this all down, so hopefully, my roundup of the best podcasts for moms will help you too.
Good Inside with Dr. Becky
Like so many other parents, I turned to Dr. Becky for advice, support, and really everything parenting related during this pandemic. I have found her tips and perspective really so refreshing and helpful. It’s really transformed my attitude towards parenting and helped me so much with discipline and connecting with my kids. I’m in no ways perfect. I still yell at my kids and hate myself afterwards, but I have found her approach and philosophy to be incredibly helpful. Her podcast does deep dives into the topics she’ll address on Instagram and in her workshops (I’ve taken a few), and I find them super helpful and the range of topics always seems to hit on what I need most at that moment. I’ve actually gone back and relistened to a lot of episodes to give you an indication of how helpful I’ve found her podcast.
Under the Influence
This fascinating deep dive into the mom influencer world left me with a lot to think about, both in terms of my own side business and my approach to social media and my kids. I also just found it fascinating. I love how it really looks at both sides of the coin — the innovation and resourcefulness and total badassery of moms who have taken the pressure society places on moms and their caretaking roles and found ways to turn them into million dollar businesses as well as the ugly side of mom blogging and influencing, from the bullying and impact of monetizing your children to the pressure to be the “perfect” mom (which we all know is an unattainable goal). Even if you’re not an influencer or blogger, this is a great listen and they just released a season 2.
Mom Goals
This is a new podcast launched by two of my friends, and it’s AWESOME, so of course I had to include it in my roundup of podcasts for moms. These two amazing working moms interview other badass moms and I just find it so insightful to hear about their experiences. Each episode is filled with great advice, insight into working mom life and motherhood, and lots of inspiration. I love how authentic everyone is, from the hosts to the women they interview. Stay tuned for an episode with yours truly!
We Can Do Hard Things With Glennon Doyle
Like everyone else, I’m obsessed with Glennon Doyle. Her most recent book, Untamed, really spoke to me and I know so many other women. She has helped get many of us through the pandemic and life, and always seems to have the perfec thing to say when you need to hear it. I wanted to flag every page of her book and I find myself saving at least a few of her Instagram posts a week because they’re always just the right words that we need to hear. So of course I immediately subscribed to her podcast. If you haven’t read her book, order it now, and then subscribe to her podcast.
In House with Arielle Charnas
It feels like everyone has a podcast these days, so I wasn’t sure if I’d get hooked on Something Navy founder and influencer extraordinaire Arielle Charnas’ new podcast. But yes, this super mom and influencer can do it all, including launch a great podcast. She mostly just interviews her team, family and friends, which I initially wasn’t sure I’d be that interested in, but I just love how open and real she is. I love just listening to her talk to her friends, husband, and family about all the stuff you would want to know, from how her business works to how she is as a boss to how she makes her marriage work and how her and her sisters still remain so close. Listening to her podcast makes me want to be one of Arielle’s sisters or friends, and I love hearing how she balances it all.
