I find post-Labor Day dressing to be extremely difficult, mostly because it still feels like summer but everyone has moved onto fall. When I wear my summer dresses, I feel like I didn’t get the memo it’s fall, but it feels weird to be wearing suede, leather and tweed in 80 degree heat. Yes, dressing for fall can be so tricky, especially here on the Northeast because the weather can stay warm well into October but then there are some cold days mixed in. And then I work in fashion, and Fashion Week hits at the start of September, so everyone is dressing for fall and it’s still 80 degrees. I hate being hot and uncomfortable, so dressing for fall takes on extra work for me. I need to find clothes that work for fall but that I wont’ sweat to death in on my subway ride into work.
That’s why I’m so obsessed with this dress. It’s the perfect compromise and way to nail dressing for fall when it’s still hot outside. I wore it this summer to a party with major heels and to work with flats, and then I can easily wear it with more fall-y shoes now and then add some tights, boots, and a turtleneck and jacket when it actually gets cold out. To nail dressing for fall when it’s still summer-like outside, look for darker prints like this dress. Go with shorter sleeves and lighter weight fabrics to help you stay cool until the temps drop. Then you can layer those pieces with chunkier knits and wool coats and even touches of fur to make them work for the colder months. I like to collect an arsenal of moody florals and prints and short sleeve dresess and tops in fall hues for just this time period.
