One of my favorite parts about summer is that you can just throw on a breezy maxi dress and look instantly put-together. Meanwhile, in winter, there’s really no such thing as a throw on and go outfit. Even if you’re going with my favorite go-to winter piece, the sweater dress, there’s tights to contend with, and then you’re still freezing because even the wool ones are never that warm. That’s why I love wearing a maxi dress in winter (and fall too for the record).
There are lots of advantages to wearing a maxi dress in winter. Maxi dresses are long and breezy, so you can layer thermal leggings, long underwear, or heavy tights underneath to keep your legs extra warm without killing the look. If I’m repurposing a summery maxi dress, I’ll throw a fitted long-sleeve top or turtleneck under and a cardigan or blazer for a cool layered look. The great thing about maxi dresses is they offer more coverage than other dresses, and they’re unexpected for winter, which I love.
Plus, wearing a maxi dress in winter is the perfect way to stretch your wardrobe further. You don’t need to buy a new set of dresses for cold weather.
Just follow these tips and ideas for styling your fave maxi dress for winter.
Wear tights or leggings underneath.
Layer on a long jacket. The jacket should either be longer than the dress or slightly shorter.
Add a fur vest.
Throw a cardigan on top.
Add tall boots for added leg warmth.
Or try clogs.
Or shoes with rich texture like velvet.
Toss on a furry coat.

Hi, like you I ❤my maxi dresses and love wearing them throughout the year. At this time of year, I quite often team my maxi dresses with long cardigans, coatigans, scarves, thick tights, or boots. Thank you for some excellent further suggestions for wearing maxi dresses during the colder weather, some of which I will certainly be trying out!!

Yes, throwing a chunky sweater over the top and wearing boots is a great way to transition a maxi dress from summer to fall.

This is so great! I never would have thought I would be able to style a maxi dress to wear all year round. I bought a maxi from https://www.limelush.com/maxi/ and I’m so excited to try and style it different ways like this.

Your winters seem to be incredibly warm, judging by the pictures (or you are never out for more than just some minutes). I would definitely need to close my coat/jacket where I am living, otherwise the mean old wind would completely destroy me.
