We are working on our first big project for the new house — our eat-in kitchen. I am so thrilled to have a large open kitchen where we can eat, cook, craft, and hang out. The kitchen opens to the family room where I hope we’ll be spending tons of time, and it’s also one of the rooms you step into from the mudroom, off of the porch. It’s a great space and one of my favorite parts is that it has a big island with counter stools where the kids love to eat and color and chat as I cook/prep meals and snacks. I mentioned before that we are going to start by giving the kitchen and family room areas a refresh as those are truly the heart of the home and where we’ll be spending the most time. They are also the rooms that arguably need the most “refreshing”. For the kitchen, we’re going to paint the cabinets and walls, replace the countertops and sink, and put in new fixtures. I also want to replace the kitchen island lighting. The two pendants that are currently there are almost like a mission style and iron and fit more with a more dated aesthetic, but they’re good place holders to let us know the size and location of the pendants we want to replace. So right now I’m on the hunt for kitchen island lighting ideas.
I shared my kitchen design inspo here and you’ll see I’m trying to keep it pretty simple and white with some chic accents and touches of blue. Lighting is not really my forte, so I’ve really spent a lot of time looking at different kitchen island lighting ideas and looking for tips on how to choose kitchen island lights. The key is really to measure correctly, which thanks to the lights currently there, we have a good sense for what size we need and the right height etc. But when it comes to design, I’m a little more on the fence.I am really loving the idea of simple white or glass pendants over the kitchen island. It’s just hard to visualize right now with the old countertops in place. I do like the idea of adding some color to the space, but I’m not sure the lights is where I”m going to do it. I think I’m going to do with art, our kitchen chairs and maybe a blue accent piece for the wall opposite the family room. I’m trying to decide if the white pendants will ultimately be too much white and whether to contrast the more silvery nickel fixtures with brass pendants or to stick to the same metal in this case. Check out the kitchen island lighting ideas inspiring me and let me know what you think.
