If you’ve been following along on our new home decorating projects, you know I’ve been agonizing over what powder room wallpaper to use for the room. We have a downstairs powder room that isn’t at the top of our list of home projects (there’s a lot of things to do, most importantly, a kitchen update) and I’m not ready to do anything major in there and give up the bathroom and live in a construction site. But our powder room was in desperate need of a makeover. The room was painted a beige-y color with dated fixtures and the floor was a brown checkerboard pattern that we didn’t love. It was very ’90s and beige and just felt a bit sad. We use the bathroom quite frequently and the kids are constantly running in and out of it when they’re playing outside or in the downstairs playroom. Andrew and I use it a lot too and were sick of looking at all the beige. We decided to give it an easy update to start and down the road, we may decide to do more, but for now, we thought a light update would make a big impact. And we weren’t wrong. We did some painting, added new powder room wallpaper, and changed out a couple fixtures and a mirror and it looks so much better.
I know the thinking is often to wait and do the entire space at once so you’re not spending money twice. I totally get that and I do think it’s smart. However, there are a lot of home projects we have on the docket that are priority over the powder room, not to mention an entire house to furnish. So the reality is that we aren’t going to focus on doing anything big to the powder room for years. I didn’t want to pee in total fugliness for the next two or three years. And on a whim, Andrew decided to just paint the walls and bead boarding, and then on another whim the floors, and it made such a difference, that we decided to give it some paper and new accessories and it’s so cute, I don’t know that we’ll do much more. Down thee road, there’s a vanity I would love to swap in for the current pedestal sink and new flooring would be nice, but I’m a fan of our painted floors so maybe we won’t even do that. In any event, I thought I’d share our powder room wallpaper with you, since I know a lot of you have been asking what we want with.
It’s funny because after all that searching and agonizing over different papers, I ended up choosing a paper on a whim (which sort of feels like the theme of this space and perhaps our whole house lol). I found a gorgeous Sanderson paper at a local designer’s barn sale. She had three rolls, which was all we needed and she sold it to me for such a steal it was a no-brainer. It was a different colorway than I was initially anticipating going with, but it fits the house and I love it. I am realizing now that it’s a similar theme to our dining room wallpaper (with birds and flowers), but I think it’s different enough and they’re far enough apart people won’t be weirded out? Or maybe they will be.
I am swapping out the mirror and got a new light that I love. I’d like to figure out a towel rack situation. some cute towels and a toilet paper holder to finish the space, but I’m already loving how it looks. The floors we painted ourselves to cover the ugly beige actually work with the powder room wallpaper imo, but we’re debating doing another coat to make them a little nicer and maybe doing a gloss over them. Let me know what you think. I’ll share the whole space when it’s done, but in the meantime, I thought it’d be fun to show more of our home progress as we go along and well, so many of you were curious about the powder room wallpaper that I didn’t want to leave you hanging (and I love that you’re following along and invested in helping me with this — very much appreciated by this wanna-be interior designer).
