Somehow I will have a seven year old in September and I’m unwell. Seven feels like true boyhood, like no longer a toddler/baby/little boy. I realize James hasn’t been a toddler or baby for quite some time, but he’s been a little boy and now he’s going into big boy territory. He’ll be a “grader” – entering first grade. He’s calling me “bro”, which I think he learned from his camp counselors? He’s not as into toys and more into sports and asking for video games. He’s almost too big for me to carry and he now can ride a bike without training wheels and swim without floaties. He can even play outside without us watching his every move. It’s crazy. It’s fun watching him grow up and start to get in on the jokes and all that but also bittersweet, which I’m sure all moms can understand. I am starting to think about his birthday, which will be here before we know it, and shop for seven year old boy gifts, which I’m actually finding a lot harder than I thought it’d be.
James is sort of over the little kid toys and all that, so I’m finding it harder to shop for gifts for him. He’s into sports but still loves arts and crafts and science projects but also sometimes wants to do things inside. When it comes to birthday gifts, I like to do a mix of a few smaller gifts that will stand the test of time (i.e., actually get played with for more than a day and provide necessary distraction on days I need him to play solo) and one or two larger gifts that are something bigger he really wants. I used to go with an assortment of smaller things, but found we were overwhelmed with toys and things and nothign was getting played with. James would love for a Nintendo Switch to be in the big gifts category, but I’m not sure I’m ready for that for him. I want to hold off on video games as long as I can. Here are the seven year old boy gifts I’m loving for James and for birthday gifts for his friends.
