It’s hard to believe I have a SIX year old. James is definitely turning into a little boy before our eyes. He no longer looks like a toddler or preschooler. He’s shot up and is just this adorable little man. He’s started kindergarten and rides the bus and buys his lunch by himself. Watching him walk into school each day all by himself just kills me. He’s been through a lot — moving to a new town, transitioning to a new school, moving between multiple places while we waited for our new house to be ready, oh and welcoming a new sibling and adjusting to mom returning to work — and he’s handled it all so well. So even though I swore I wouldn’t buy my kids endless toys and really try not to, I have been a little extra generous with small treats, birthdays and now the holidays. I love making the people in my life feel super special on their birthdays and the holidays, and especially my kids. And like many kids, James’ love language is presents, so it’s really fun to shop for him. He loves toys and gifts, and I know you’re thinking what kid doesn’t? But honestly if you ask James his favorite part of any experience, he’ll say when he got the stuffy or toy. It used to bug me and make me worry we were raising a spoiled brat, but it’s not like we’re buying him toys all the time and honestly, I just think he really loves toys. Plus, I feel like most toys for kids these days are cool for five minutes but don’t offer much longevity in terms of play time. Like who can spend more than 15 minutes driving a toy car around? Magna Tiles and Legos are the exception to this — and puzzles, which James loved although not as much anymore. My point: I think he’s always excited about more toys because so many we’ve gotten over the years, break or get boring after a day. So I’m looking for really good gifts for 6 year old boys that he’ll play with for more than a couple days.
Since James has had lots of birthday parties to attend as well this year, I’ve also been looking for great gifts for 6 year old boys to give his friends that their parents won’t hate me for. I’ve done lots of research, mostly asking my mom friends as well as shopping late at night while I should be sleeping, and I think I’ve come up with a pretty comprehensive list of gifts for 6 year old boys. And don’t worry, my toy-aholic has vetted many of these himself and can vouch for how awesome they are. And if you’re looking for more ideas, here are my favorite presents for five year old boys, many of which still work for 6 year olds.
