So James is at the age (I think?) where kids start to care about what they’re wearing and noticing what’s “cool” and not. He’s six and will be starting first grade in the fall, and sees what the bigger kids are wearing and wants to look cool too. He’s really into sports now and so he’s in that phase where he wants to wear Under Armor and Nike and sports shorts and shirts and sneakers instead of the cute preppy clothes I’d like to dress him in forever. I am loosening the reigns a bit. I want him to feel good about himself and what he’s wearing. But I also would love for him to wear something besides lacrosse shorts, especially to school. I’m thinking we may compromise and agree that he wears nicer clothes to school but can wear whatever he wants on the weekends and can wear sneakers to school every day that he chooses. The trouble is, it’s really hard to find the best sneakers without laces for boys. James is at the size where a lot of sneaker shoe laces, but we’re not quite there with the shoe lace tying and it’s hard for them at school if their laces come undone. James is really into Nike sneakers now, but we also love the New Balance velcro ones. Adidas makes some great ones as does Veja. With that said, it is harder to find cute sneakers for boys than one might think. A lot of people like to shop irl, but honestly, I just don’t have the patience, so I use a shoe measurer I bought on Amazon and then we order shoes and try them on at home.
