Fall is one of my favorite times to travel. We usually spend the first few weeks or month of fall at home as we settle into our new fall and back to school routines and recover from a summer of activities and travel. But towards the end of September, the travel bug hits me. The leaves start to turn, the weather is beautiful and I get the itch to go on an adventure. While I love planning summer getaways and winter escapes, fall is one of my favorite times to plan a little getaway, especially since there are lots of long weekends throughout the season thanks to holidays and days off school. I know a lot of you are planning to go for a road trip or even fly somewhere fun, so I thought I’d help with a post on what to pack for a fall getaway.
The key to deciding what to pack for a fall getaway is to consider the activities, setting and weather. Since the weather this time of year can be so variable, I always like to bring lots of layers. Even if you’re heading somewhere warm like Florida (here’s what I wore on our fall trip to Florida in 2019 and 2022) or the Bahamas (here’s what I wore on my fall girls’ trip there), the evenings can get cool. And if you’re going to be in the mountains or New England or Europe, you’ll definitely want to layer up. It can go from hot to cold in a matter of hours. Then think about the setting so you can tap into those vibes — city, mountains or country, beach, you get my drift. Finally, pack for the activities you’re going to be partaking in, whether that’s shopping and exploring, lunches and dinners out, hiking or pumpkin picking.
Here are ideas for what to pack for a fall getaway, whether you’re heading to the mountains or country, beach, or city.
