Today I’m answering one of the most common style questions I get asked in the fall and winter — what to wear under sweaters. I totally get why this is a common question. It’s something no one really covers but is often a tricky layer. You want something light that won’t add bulk or necessarily be seen but it also has to work in case you get hot and take off your sweater (i.e., not the yellowed, holey undershirts you never throw out) and it has to work under more sheer sweaters.
Now, some people do not wear anything under their sweaters, and I totally respect that. For certain types of sweaters, that’s necessary and totally works. But I personally, almost always wear a lightweight tee under my sweaters. For one, I have super sensitive skin and even non-wool sweaters can feel itchy or just uncomfortable on my skin. And the second reason is that I don’t like to wash my sweaters after every use. I know this may seem gross to some of you and you may not want to be friends anymore, but I assure you, I do not smell and if a sweater is spilled on or otherwise dirty, I will wash it,. But cashmere and other knit fabric tends to be delicate and the more you wash it, the less it holds up. So I only wash my sweaters after a few wears or when they need it. I also (and sorry again for the TMI) have chosen to use natural deodorants that frankly don’t work as well, so I worry about sweat, so I always like to have a long sleeve or short sleeve t-shirt under my sweaters to add an extra layer between my pits and my knits. Gotta give me credit for that rhyme, right? So long story short, today, I’m sharing what to wear under sweaters.
Generally, when deciding what to wear under sweaters, you should consider the color and weight and crop of the sweater. I always choose a white t-shirt as a colored shirt can be seen through certain fabrics and colors. I choose a fitted tee that is slightly cropped so that it won’t poke out from under the sweater if it’s on the shorter side. Finally, I always choose a long or short sleeve t-shirt as I mentioned over a tank or cami to add armpit protection so that you’re not getting any sweats or smells on your knits. I always choose a tee that’s super lightweight so that it doesn’t add bulk under lighter knits.
Here are my favorite picks for what to wear under sweaters. And PS: I use these under cardigans and blazers as well.
