It’s always hard to dress when the seasons start to change, especially in early spring. In fact, one of the most commonly searched fashion queries this time of year “what to wear when it’s 60 degrees?”. I totally get that. Sixty degrees can feel warm or cold or a bit of both, depending on where you are, what time of day, and what season you are coming from. I find sixty-degree weather to be the hardest to dress for. It’s often sunny but cool. A winter jacket feels too much but not jacket feels too little. A heavy sweater and boots feels like overload but sandals and a sundress feels like too little. This type of weather really calls for a good layering strategy, because it also can feel colder when the snow isn’t shining on you and warmer when it is. I am always cold, so while sixty degrees may cause some to bust out the sundresses and shorts, I prefer to wait until it’s 75+ for that sort of attire.
I have gotten so many requests for help getting dressed right now. Early spring in the Northeast is tough so it makes sense. You’re over all the winter bulk but it still feels a bit too chilly for the full-on spring looks. I also get lots of requests for help dressing for trips where the forecast is 60 degrees, especially when you were planning for 80 degrees. So I thought I’d pull together a blog post with tips and ideas for what to wear when it’s 60 degrees outside. My strategy here is always layers. I usually opt for pants or a longer midi or maxi dress, as I’m done with tights once the thermometer climbs above 40 degrees or we hit mid March. If I do wear tights, they’re hidden under a longer dress or skirt. I always opt for closed-toe shoes this time of year, but I trade the boots in for flats, loafers, mules, or pumps. Again, I wait for 75+ to wear the sandals. On top, it’s always a mix of layers — a sweater over a dress or skirt and a lightweight jacket; a button-down or blouse and medium weight jacket; a lightweight sweater, lightweight jacket and t-shirt under it all. This way, you can take off and add layers throughout the day as needed.
