I really learned the value of window treatments over the past few years. They can truly transform a space. They’re more than just accessories (I always thought of them as the earrings of the outfit, but they make a much bigger impact) . They can be foundational to a space as well as serve an important function. And as someone who loves pretty prints and designs, window treatments are my favorite to look for when designing a space. When I was working on our current home, I found out the downside of window treatments — the insane cost. Yes, you can get some great, affordable options from many online and mall retailers like Wayfair, West Elm, etc.. But for that adorable roman shade in that designer print that you know will make the room… well, it’s going to cost you… a lot. As any longtime followers know, I’m not one to pay full price for anything. I enjoy the thrill of the hunt and the high of scoring a deal on something expensive or designer way too much. So as soon as I began to do the math on the window treatments I wanted and the number of windows we needed to accessorize in our home (spoiler alert: it was a lot), I started researching where to find affordable window treatments.
To be honest, there’s not a lot of places that share good resources, especially for custom shades and curtains, so I thought I’d share a roundup of where to find affordable window treatments, because not everyone wants to or can afford a designer to source and have them made for you.
During my hunt, I’ve discovered some true gems and now I’m going to give away my secrets and share where to find affordable window treatments. And when I say affordable, these aren’t cheap or cookie cutter. I’ve found some great ways to get custom roman shades and curtains in beautiful designer prints and with the pleats and styles you desire for a fraction of what they should cost. Not just that, but I have been so thrilled and blown away with the customer service, design and craftsmanship and the price (relative to other quotes I got form designers) on these custom window treatments that I just had to share. I actually have been meaning to write this post for so long, but it’s just been hard to find the time to sit down and put all the info in one place. While some of these options are still an investment, they are a fraction of what I was quoted from designers, and they turned out so nicely and allowed me to control the process and learn some things along the way. Of course, they didn’t all come with professional installation but the hubs is learning quite well and many of the sources helped us install from afar, which came in handy with Covid raging when we moved in.
Here’s my guide for where to find affordable window treatments.
Etsy
Lynn makes roman shades, curtains and pillows in designer fabrics she can source for you, including hard-to-find fabrics. She’s incredible to work with and will walk you through the installation process as well.
Michele created custom roman shades for our bedroom and they couldn’t have turned out better. She helped me decide on the right measurements, fabrics and trim for a customized look that perfectly fit our decor and windows.
The Shade Store
This is a great place to go for a full-service experience. They’ll come measure your windows, help you select the right shades or curtains, install them — the whole deal. It’s more expensive than ordering and installing yourself, but they’re great if you want to achieve a designer, professional look without necessarily paying for an interior designer. They’ll also make sure you have the practical stuff nailed down like the shades you pick block enough light and offer the privacy you want. One of my favorite designers Ariel Lokin worked with them on her new house, and shared the results on her Instagram and it’s proof you can achieve that gorgeous, designer look.
Restoration Hardware
I love their linen curtains. They’re well constructed, the perfect weight, and look far more luxe than the price tag. Restoration Hardware is my go-to for neutral curtains. Their kids line also has cute curtains and roman shades.
Pottery Barn
Pottery barn also has great curtains in a plethora of colors if you’re looking for an affordable, basic window treatment. Their kids line has cute shades and curtains as well and I love their blackout kids shades for any bedroom.
Amazon
I’ve found everything from bamboo shades to the perfect white curtains on Amazon that are a fraction of the price of even Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware and look completely designer. The issue is you have to do the measurements and installation yourself, so you really have to make sure you get those right. They also have so much inventory so you want to make sure you’re getting the right ones. But they have a great return policy, so you can always try and return if they don’t’ work.

Tammie says
Windows are not just openings in walls; they are portals to the outside world. They frame our view of the world and allow natural light to flood into our spaces. Whether it’s the soft glow of morning sunlight or the twinkle of city lights at night, windows offer a connection to the ever-changing beauty of our surroundings. They provide us with a glimpse of the world’s diversity, from bustling streets to serene landscapes. So, let’s appreciate the humble window for its ability to bring the outside in and add a touch of magic to our lives.
