I’m back with another easy outfit formula — oversized sweaters and full midi skirts — that will take you through the winter months. I love putting together these posts because the goal is to help take the guesswork out of getting dressed. With a formula, you just plug in the pieces and you’re good to go. If you love it, you can vary the pieces and by different variations of that formula, or you can just have one version that you rotate throughout the week or month. I use formula dressing to make life easier and get dressed quickly. If you start to save pictures of outfits you love, you’ll notice there are patterns and formulas you can adopt, whether it’s a striped shirt, jeans and a jacket, or the latest outfit formula dominating the street style/Instagram/TikTok feeds — oversized sweaters and full midi skirts.
Skirts are having a moment right now, and for the colder months, I love a fuller midi skirt that you can easily wear tights under. But springtime is also a great time to play with skirts, because they’re easy to layer sweaters and jackets over since the weather can be so fickle and change throughout the day. And then you can wear the skirts into summer with tank tops and tees and a cute pair of sandals or sneakers. To nail this outfit formula, go with a crewneck sweater and size up one or two sizes for an oversized look or look for one with a more oversized fit. Choose a full midi skirt that hits 3-5 inches above your ankle. You can play with proportions for a cooler look and do some counterintuitive styling. Rather than a fitted sweater, which can feel more prim when teamed with a full midi skirt, opt for an oversized knit. You can tuck it under or leave it out long. It’s as comfy as it is chic, which is my favorite kind of chic. Add in boots to dress it up a bit for colder months, add cute ballet flats for a more pulled-together vibe, or try sneakers for a more laidback cool-girl feel. Here’s how to wear my favorite winter outfit combo.
