If you’ve been following along on our home journey, you’ve probably heard me mention before that a lot of the spaces are newly renovated or in great condition but just not necessarily to our taste. The house is not a total fixer upper like our last one, which we chose on purpose as we needed to be able to move in (and also, not sure we had the energy to do again after all our moves and the new baby at the time). I thought that would be easier on me, but it’s actually turning out to kind of drive me crazy. I want to just redo it all to be more aesthetically pleasing and because I just see a vision for all the spaces (which is why we/I fell for the house as soon as we saw it) but home upgrades are time-consuming and expensive, even the superficial stuff, so I can’t just wave my magic faux designer wand and have it all done. That’s probably a good thing in that it keeps me from making some massive rash mistakes. But it also means that we’re just slowly chipping away at projects and no one space is completely done. And some spaces are getting two phase – a makeover now and perhaps a full renovation later. The kids’ bathroom is one such space. We added wallpaper to the previous grey walls and it made a big difference. The space really pops, which is nice because it’s at the end of the hall when you walk up the stairs. The only problem was that the floors, which were a marbly tan tile, didn’t look great with the navy vanity that was there when we moved in, the navy and white wallpaper or the grey shower tiles. I’m not sure if it was just really old when they updated the rest of the bathroom or if it was a choice (it is in great condition). Ripping up the floors is not a top priority project and would probably result in a lot more renovation we’re not ready to take on now, so we decided to try painting the floors. I shared a little on Instagram and got tons of questions so I thought I’d share how to paint a tile floor in a bathroom.
So here’s the step by step tutorial for how to paint a tile floor in a bathroom.
1. Clean the Floor Really Well
The first thing you need to when painting tile floor in a bathroom is to really clean the floors. Vaccum, mop, let completely dry and wipe down again.
2. Invest in a Kit
We must this kit and it was really helpful. We’re amateurs over here so it was pretty foolproof and since bathroom floors get lots of water and traction, this kit helped to seal them so the paint wouldn’t chip off.
3. Choose your color
We went with white, which we thought would look the best with the other colors in the room. We may add a marble design later if I’m feeling extra crafty but for now, it’s simple and works. Does it look as luxe as marble? No but you also don’t look down and cringe. Choose a color that will cover what’s existing, looks good with the rest of the room design, and works for the space. The white looks less like a painted DIY job than if we went with a color, so that was was our thinking. If you’re really crafty or artistic, you could always use stencils to create a pattern or paint on a marble design with a paint like this.
4. Tape
You need to tape up the edges of the tub and/or vanity and toilet, doorway etc. so that you don’t get paint on them. Be careful not to get any tape on the floor or when you pull it up, you’ll pull up the paint and need to touch up (which is a rookie mistake we made)
5. Apply the base coat
Follow the directions and apply the base and then make sure to let it dry for the full six hours before applying the next coat. We used a bristle brush on the edges, which was especially helpful in hard to reach corners around toilet and tub etc. and a roller for the main area.
6. Apply the top coat
After you apply the top coat, wait a full 24 hours before walking on it. We gave it almost 48 hours before we walked on it or used the bathroom to be safe.
And that’s how to paint a tile floor in a bathroom. Not too hard, right? We’re really happy with how it turned out and doesn’t make me cringe every time I look at the floor and will be a good holdover until we replace floors, but honestly, we may also just keep them like this. There’s always a project that has priority with a home and I’m liking how these turned out.
