I, for one, am not typically a major fan of sequins. It’s just too much glitz and glam for my more pared-down style. And having grown up a ballet dancer, I got my fair share of sequins and sparkle with my Nutcracker costumes. I don’t even typiclaly like them for evening wear, or even holiday dressing tbh. So even I am shocked to admit that I’m sorta, really, totally a fan of the sparkly daytime looks like right now. (Proof that our style and taste can evolve and shouldn’t it as we ourselves change and evolve? Also, a great item or trend or collection can totally change how we view about certain things.) I spotted lots of sparkle at Paris Fashion Month and have seen sequins popping up on the city streets, in broad daylight, no less, ever since. Maybe when sequins adorn a silhouette once considered frumpy like the turtleneck, or a boardroom staple like the pencil skirt, the unexpected twist makes it feel less Vegas bachelor party or disco ball cheesy. Or maybe it’s how I’m seeing a blingy top styled with jeans and chunky loafers, or a sparkly skirt paired with a chunky sweater, making it totally unexpected and therefore, cool. Like of course I’m wearing a sequined top with my high-waisted mom jeans and Stan Smiths, casual. I am tempted to try on this trend and I know a lot of you are, so I thought I’d share some tips and tricks for how to wear sequins during the daytime (without looking ridiculous).
Play with Contrasts: Tame the high-shine embellishment with other types of fabrics, the more contrast the better — think: chunky knits, denim, a cotton tee.
Pair with More Casual Pieces: Dress down sequins for daytime by pairing with cotton tees, denim, oversized knits, sneakers, etc.
Consider Lighter Colors: Sequins paired with creams, beiges, pastels will work better for daytime than black, red or bronze or gold, which can read a bit fancier/evening wear-ready.
Go Easy on the Accessories: Let the sequins shine and keep the rest of your accessories low-key.
Stick to One High-Shine Piece: For daytime, choose one sequined item — a skirt, pair of pants, top, or bag and keep the rest of the look more subdued.
While I’m not sure I’m ready to give casual sequins a spin myself, if you do, here are my favorite ideas for how to wear sequins during the daytime.
