The first week back after vacation is never easy, so sometimes a cute outfit is the only reason to get out of bed. After a couple weeks of indulging over the holidays, however, I opted for more forgiving (roomy) fits until I get the bloat and food baby under control. So as you’ll see from my roundup of what I wore the first week of January 2018, I kept the silhouettes forgiving but tried to step it up with luxe fabrics, a mix of textures and subtle prints. I find that if I”m going to be wearing more roomy silhouettes, I need to offset the roomier styles with more tailored or stepped-up touches so that it doesn’t feel sloppy and still feels tailored enough for a corporate office. I may work in fashion magazines, but it’s still very much a corporate office vibe.
I know that you probably think velvet dresses are just for the holidays and it’s time to put them away, but I hate to save my clothes for just one-time wears, so I brought a velvet dress out post-holiday after a day at the office by toning it down with simple, polished black accessories. I made a chunky sweater and black pants feel a bit more interesting by opting for a sweater vest with a statement collar and then leaned into a menswear vibe with Gucci loafers. And then I did wear something more fitted but I balanced it with a cropped moto jacket until the post-holiday bloat goes down.
Here’s what I wore the first week of January 2018.

Outfit 1: Velvet Dress; Stole (old but similar here); Patent Leather Heels

Outfit 2: Everlane Sweater (old but similar here); Theory Pants (old but similar here); Horsebit Loafers
