I used to always wonder why my mom always wore these huge crazy hats to the beach or pool during the summer. I thought they were kind of embarrassing, the big straw hats that covered her face. They felt so… dramatic. I also didn’t understand why she hid from the sun under umbrellas or in the shade. She warned me about sun damage and wrinkles and skin cancer. But, of course, like all naive youth, I wasn’t concerned. I would never get old, or really I couldn’t get old fast enough when I was young. It wasn’t until I got my first signs of sun damage and first wrinkles that I became religious about face coverage in the sun. I wear SPF year-round and I’m religious about it. I follow the french and wear sunglasses anytime I’m outside, clouds be damned. And in summertime, I am never without a hat. I even have a collection of fall and winter hats that offer sun protection, but that’s for another time and post. Each summer, I try to add to my hat collection so I am not tempted to forgo my sun coverage. For the past couple of years, I’ve been eyeing Lorna Murray’s woven hats. They’re so chic and just remind me of a European vacation. I kept almost pulling the trigger but held back. I was afraid they wouldn’t look good on me and might not be as practical as a goes-with-everything straw hat. But this summer I wanted something more fun and packable for our upcoming vacations, and I’m thrilled to say that the Lorna Murray hats live up to the hype. I have had so many questions about them since sharing on IG and TikTok, so I thought I’d share my Lorna Murray hat review.
Ok, first of all, I just have to say, the hats come in the prettiest colorways and patterns. They’re so fun that I had a really hard time picking. I like the idea of mixing and matching and not being perfectly matchy-matchy. With that said, I would think about when you’re going to be wearing the hats the most and going with colors that work with that. For example, I knew I’d be wearing mine to the pool and beach and with coverups a lot, so I went with colors that matched my suits and coverups. I also knew I’d wear with sundresses so looked to my closet to see what would work. I’m pleased to say the hats are made of really high quality materials and well constructed so they’re not fraying even with somewhat rough handling (I have kids, I can’t help it). I have one in a small and one in a medium. Both work. The medium is probably perfect, but I like the small as well. I was impressed at how well they fit to your head. Their genius construction makes them super foldable and packable. They fold up super tiny in your suitcase and then pop up into a hat. It’s genius. And I like having the ribbon so that it doesn’t blow away when I’m running after kids etc. They’re also so pretty I love hanging them from hooks in our mudroom. All in all, I’m really pleased with the hats. I think they’re so fun and chic and such an easy addition to any outfit. Hope that helps!
